Empowering Communities Through Volunteer Projects
At Taking Ownership PDX, our mission is to support Black homeowners and strengthen our communities through volunteer-driven projects. We’re excited to share the success of two recent projects that have made a meaningful impact on the lives of homeowners in need.
Project 1: Restoring Safety & Comfort
In one of our recent volunteer projects, we had the opportunity to assist a homeowner who had faced significant challenges with home upkeep after the passing of their spouse. Over the course of two separate days, our dedicated volunteers devoted a total of eight hours to transform the property.
The tasks undertaken were extensive and varied, including removing overgrown limbs and ivy, trimming trees, raking leaves, cleaning gutters, and clearing debris. However, the project didn’t stop there. Thanks to the generosity of a contractor and their son from our volunteer list, the safety of the home was greatly improved. They took it upon themselves to replace rotten boards in the steps and deck, creating a much safer entryway for the homeowner.
Through collective effort and dedication, we were able to not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the property but also restore safety and comfort to the homeowner, providing peace of mind during a challenging time.
Project 2: Transforming Outdoor Spaces
Another recent project involved assisting a homeowner in need of a yard cleanup and organization. With a yard cluttered with unwanted items and overgrown blackberry bushes, the homeowner sought our help to create a more functional and enjoyable outdoor space for their family.
Our volunteers sprang into action, assembling a shed for storage, clearing out unwanted items, and tackling the task of knocking back the invasive blackberry bushes. By opening up the yard, we provided the homeowner and their family with the opportunity to engage in gardening and outdoor activities, fostering a sense of pride and connection to their home.
These volunteer projects exemplify the spirit of community and empowerment at the heart of Taking Ownership PDX. Through the collective efforts of our volunteers, we not only improve physical spaces but also uplift spirits and strengthen bonds within our neighbors.
